Singapore may be relatively small compared to other countries, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to see and do! Living in Malaysia, I have been extremely fortunate to be able to visit Singapore many times, and I am happy to report that I have always found the attractions, service and people to be top-notch. With that in mind, join me as I explore the best things to do in Singapore and prove why this city is a place you want to add to your bucket list.

When considering what to do in Singapore, it’s important to decide what kind of trip you want to take and what kind of traveller you are. Are you more interested in art or animals? Is trying new food a priority? Because we all have vastly different interests, I have incorporated a healthy mix of different activities.

Read on to discover which ones are right for you!

Try The Local Cuisine

In Singapore, most locals enjoy their meals from hawker stalls. These stalls offer a wide range of quick, delicious, and affordable meals without any unnecessary frills—just simple, good, honest food. The variety of food available at these stalls is what makes them truly special.

If this is your first time in Singapore, you must try char kway teow, which consists of rice noodles, prawns/shrimp, vegetables, eggs, and a mixture of dark sauces. Other fantastic meals to sample are chicken rice and satay.

For all you veggies out there, you simply must try laksa, a delicious spicy soup that can be made both with or without meat. There are also lots of vegetarian noodle dishes available if you’re more into substance than soupy dishes!

Go Wild On A Night Safari

The Night Safari is an absolute must if you’re a fan of animals and adventure. You’ll encounter a fascinating array of nocturnal animals, including Asian elephants and lions, Malayan tigers, leopards, Nile hippos, giraffes, and many more.

This immersive, educational, and magical experience is perfect for solo travellers, couples, and families. You can visit Mandai Wildlife Reserve during the day, but for the best experience, avoid the midday sun and hop on the tram at dusk for a night with the animals. Just remember to pack your bug spray!

Get Arty At The National Gallery

The National Gallery is a must-visit for those who enjoy learning, observing, and adding a touch of culture to their trip. With different exhibitions available, you will surely find something that piques your interest.

For instance, the current exhibition, ‘Laws Of Our Land,’ available until 2029, delves into the Citizenship Ordinance, Women’s Charter, and Employment Act. If that’s not your cup of tea, why not explore the innovative Art by Cheong Soo Pieng in the exhibition, ‘Layer by Layer?’ This exhibition, available until 29 September 2024, offers a unique opportunity to uncover the artist’s untold stories through diverse mediums and interesting perspectives.

The best part? The exhibitions mentioned have free entry! Just be sure to check the entry fees for other exhibitions before you go.

Have Fun At Universal Studios

If you want the ultimate adrenaline rush and have a whole day in Singapore to spare, you absolutely must visit Universal Studios. Situated in Resorts World Sentosa, with four attractions on offer, fun is pretty much guaranteed for all who enter the park. Within Universal Studios itself, expect to be greeted by all your favourite characters, such as The Minions, Skrek, Trolls and infamous Jurassic Park beasts.

If you’re feeling brave, check out the roller coaster Battlestar Galactica: Human VS Cylon in Sci-Fi City. This ride is insane and so much fun, but be warned—it’s not for the faint of heart! With endless rides, attractions, and restaurants available, you will surely make some wonderful memories here.

Take A Relaxing River Cruise

If you want to sit back, relax and learn about Singapore in a different way (one that doesn’t involve walking, yay!) The Singapore River Cruise is perfect for you. As you cruise along historic routes, learn about the city’s trade history and important landmarks such as the Raffles Landing Site, the iconic Merlion statue, Marina Bay Sands, and much more.

This laid-back way of getting to know the city is ideal for anyone who only has half a day to spare and wants to see all the essential stuff fairly quickly, those who have difficulty walking long distances, and, of course, those who love boat rides!

When considering the best things to do in Singapore, consider your interests, how much time you have, and how much money you want to spend. After that, coming up with a plan for your trip should be easy.

Whether you decide to prioritise the Night Safari or the National Gallery, rest assured that you’ll have the time of your life in this dynamic and wonderful city.
