Make Up For Ever recently launched an upgraded formula of their iconic Ultra HD Foundation, the new HD SKIN foundation. The claims? That it is “for skin that looks like skin under any light”. And also that it is an “undetectable stay-true foundation”. But do these claims hold up? Well, I put it to the test.

With the help of the makeup expert at MUFE, I managed to find the perfect shade for my skin. I personally think that finding the exact shade is an ultra important factor in creating a truly natural look. It did help that I had 40 shades, four “families” (light, medium, tan and deep) and three undertones (red, natural and yellow) to choose from.

I was also happy to find out at the launch that I could choose a shade straight away instead of having to wait and see if it oxidizes to a darker shade since it stays colour true.

Does my skin look like skin under any light after application? Yes, it is really quite “undetectable”. But while I like the natural look it creates, I do have some skin issues like pigmentation and dark circles under my eyes that need some extra cover-up. This buildable formula is great because it doubles up as a concealer for a lazy girl like me. I simply add an extra one or two thin layers in those areas and am usually good to go.

As for staying power, I did find light traces of the foundation on my surgical mask on those days when I was trying it out. Having said that, I do admit to perspiring a fair bit in Singapore’s humid and warm climate. Luckily, a quick check in the mirror showed that the makeup wasn’t patchy so probably only a thin layer was rubbed off.

I would definitely suggest a layer of Ultra HD Loose Finishing Powder to help prevent this. I skipped loose powder as I wanted to put the staying power of the foundation by itself to the test. Overall, this is a good foundation for those who are looking for a non-drying formulation to create an ultra-natural look that lasts.

The foundation creates a semi-matte effect that is quite true to real skin and not too dewy. To create an ultra-matte look, simply set the makeup with Ultra HD Matte Setting Powder for a long lasting finish. The new HD Skin Foundation retails for $68 and is available Sephora stores and online.
