Let me start off by saying that I invest a lot of money on my bedding. As a long term insomniac, I try to make my bed feel as inviting and luxurious as possible, and rotate between 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton bedding, bamboo bedding and silk pillow cases. It would be quite accurate to say that I am a huge fan of silk, and personally own several silk pillowcases, and can attest to how much better my hair and skin has gotten since using them. I especially love the fact that I no longer wake up with creases from my pillow case branded across my face, like some sort of mutant wrinkle.

The word SOVA means “sleep” in Swedish, and this local brand came about during Singapore’s Circuit Breaker period last year with the hope of changing people’s perception of beauty Sleep, with a line of luxurious, skin-loving bedding and accessories made from pure mulberry silk.

SOVA’s product line includes pillow cases in six colours, eye masks and hair accessories such as headbands and scrunchies, all made with 22 momme mulberry silk. The pillow cases feature an envelope closure to fit most pillow sizes well and is lightweight and convenient to take when traveling, something that I make a point of doing, before lockdown happened of course.

Silk is a natural fibre and should not be confused with satin, which is synthetic. While satin pillowcases also help prevent hair breakage and tangles and unsightly creases on your face, they do not have the skin-benefiting qualities that silk does. Silk fabrics naturally moisturise skin and hair, which is why you will notice that when you wake up in the morning, your face won’t be bone dry, and neither will your hair.

It also has hypoallergenic properties like a natural resistance to dust mites, mould, and fungus and does not pick up as much pore-clogging bacteria as cotton does. It is also a breathable fabric and a natural temperature regulator, and helps the body retain heat in cold weather while excess heat is expelled in warm weather, helping your body maintain a comfortable, natural temperature. In spite of its delicate appearance, silk is relatively robust and is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics.

I wash my silk clothing and bedding in the washing machine using a special detergent for silk fabrics, so in terms of maintenance, its not complicated or difficult. I have recommended silk pillowcases and gifted them to good friends and family, who have in turn fallen in love with them too.

If you would like to treat yourself, I would strongly recommend getting a silk pillow case and eye mask from SOVA. The eye mask is an absolute luxury against your delicate eye area, and you can sleep rest assured that your skin is being moisturised and protected as you slumber.
