Fashion should be fun and reflect who you are, inside. While there are some basic rules to follow, on the whole, it should be seen as a way to express yourself. Don’t allow your look to be dictated by what is currently trending. Instead, look for pieces that speak to you and in time, you will develop your own unique style.
“Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There’s no how-to road map to style. It’s about self expression and, above all, attitude.” —Iris Apfel
Here are some basic fashion staples that we believe every woman should have in her wardrobe.
A Classic Black Slip Dress
“One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress.” —Karl Lagerfeld
If you have slim, better yet, well-toned arms, a slip dress would look fabulous on you. It’s one of those truly transitional pieces that can be dressed down with sneakers for the day and up with stilettos and jewellery for the night.
White sneakers are timeless. They look great with everything from dresses to shorts and better yet, they are so comfortable. Just be sure not to have your socks peek over the rim, because that’s never a good look.
The Oversized Blazer
This is such a great layering piece. You can style it with jeans, skirts, leather pants, literally anything!
A Structured Black Tee
This is a must-have in your wardrobe. It’s a great layering piece and can be worn with jeans for a smart casual look, under a jacket for a smart work look, or tossed over a pair of shorts so you are comfortable but still look pulled together.
A Pair Of Well-Cut Jeans
With so many options out there, it’s hard to know if you should invest in a boyfriend, skinny, mom or high-rise pair of jeans, but here’s what we think, get a pair in a cut that flatters your shape. Forget what’s trending, so long as it’s not stone-wash, get a pair that enhances your assets and hides your flaws.
A Crisp white cotton shirt
There is truly nothing more stylish than a crisp white cotton shirt. You can pair it with shorts or belted over a long pleated skirt, whichever way you wear it, this versatile piece always looks stylish.
One caveat though, keep your whites white and if it does start to look dingy, it’s time to let it go.
A Statement Necklace Or Earrings
Accessories are a fabulous way to dress up an outfit, but when it comes to accessories, follow the less is more rule or you will end up looking like a christmas tree.
“If there was a choice on spending a lot of money on accessories or dress, I always chose accessories. I think jewelry can change an outfit more than anything else.” – Iris Apfel
A Pair Of Black Combat Boots
This season we saw different variations of combat boots paraded down virtual cat walks and while this may not be a look for style for everyone, we love that it adds an edge to just about any look.
