As someone who understands and constantly expounds on the superior cleaning power of an electric facial cleaner, it is beyond ironic that up until a week ago, I was still using a manual toothbrush.

While I have used electric toothbrushes in the past, for some reason or the other, I just didn’t stick to them, and always found myself reverting back to my trusty old manual brush. But when I received the new Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart electric toothbrush, I was quite excited to try it out and this time, actually stick to it, because it was possibly the most beautiful brush that I had ever seen.

I don’t think most people are aware of this but oral disease affects 3.9 billion people worldwide and can impact every aspect of our lives, from relationships and self-confidence, to school, work, and socializing with others. Think about it, as humans, we instinctively judge people on how they look, dress and smell, which is why a smelly mouth full of stained teeth is just not going to take you far.

Let’s Talk About The Brush

The Philips DiamondClean Smart comes with five modes and five heads – Clean, White+, Deep Clean+, Gum Health and Tongue Care+ and three intensities – High, Medium and Low.

It is the smartest gadget that I own and is super powerful with its 62,000 brush movements per minute. It is simple to use and the instructions are clear and idiot-proof. When I first got the brush, in my excitement to try it out, I didn’t connect it to the app, so I just used the Clean brush head and it automatically switched itself off after 3 minutes.

Once connected to the app, you need to switch between the different heads to get a comprehensive clean and polish. The brush is really smart and recognises each head and runs through the process accordingly, giving you little nudges when you are putting too much pressure or need to move to a different part of your mouth.

I like the fact that it also comes with a tongue cleaner head. People don’t realise that their tongue is a cesspit of dead skin cells, bacteria, toxins, fungi and food debris and that most of the stench causing bacteria stay around and on their tongue, so simply brushing their teeth is not going to give them a mouth that someone is going to want to kiss.

The Science Behind The Philips DiamondClean Smart

It was developed in partnership with dentists for 25 years and Philips Sonicare is the No. 1 recommended sonic toothbrush brand by dental professionals worldwide. Each Sonicare toothbrush has been rigorously tested on real consumers and developed with dental associations for a consistent performance.

The Sonicare’s advanced sonic technology incorporates 62,000 brush movements per minute to drive fluid in between teeth and along the gum line for a gentle and thorough clean. This technology creates microbubbles as you brush to ensure long-lasting fresh breath.

Clinically proven to improve oral health, the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart electric toothbrush removes up to 10x more plaque compared to manual toothbrush, delivers up to 7x healthier gums in just two weeks and removes up to 100% more stains in just three days, compared to a manual toothbrush.

Smart Sensor Technology

The built-in smart sensor technology syncs automatically to the Sonicare App, providing real time feedback. These sensors include:

  • ✓  Location sensor to track and improve brushing coverage, so that you do not miss any spots.
  • ✓  Scrubbing sensor to guide and reduce excess movements and scrubbing when brushing to keep your enamel intact.
  • ✓  Pressure sensor to alert you when you are applying too much pressure while brushing (amethyst light will also flash at the bottom of toothbrush handle) to reduce teeth and gum sensitivity.

Sonicare App Connectivity

The Sonicare App transforms into a ‘virtual hub’, allowing consumers to track how well they are brushing each day, set goals, focus on trouble spots, and share their results with their dentist. The smart brush head sensors are also programmed to automatically select the optimal mode and intensity to provide gentle yet effective care for your gums.

The Sonicare App offers useful data- driven insights that informs you of areas that require extra attention and coaches you to become a better, more mindful brusher.

In addition, for those who travel regularly, the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart can be taken everywhere with its deluxe USB travel case that doubles as a charger.

Final Verdict

Do I think the brush is worth the price? Let’s put it this way; it is by far the smartest gadget (other than for my computer and phone) that I own. It does a fabulous job of cleaning my teeth, caring for my gums, cleaning my tongue and keeping my pearly whites, looking pearly white.

It also tells me where I am going wrong in my brushing and this can help me from having any dental issues in the future. As an added benefit, it looks stylish on my vanity so yes, to me it is worth the price.
