After a dark and stormy autumn/winter 2019, Prada’s mood is looking brighter and headed for all things sunshine for spring/summer 2020. Gigi Hadid, Freja Beha Erichsen, Adut Akech, and Kaia Gerber were among the supermodels showcasing Prada’s sunny new range at the Milan Fashion Week show.
The collection showcased the core of spring/summer 2020 as essential items for the modern woman who finds herself sauntering between highrises and palm trees.
“Classicism and Prada classicism: there are elements of a universal history, and specific components can be recognised immediately as Prada. Fabrications, embroideries, patterns, colours combined―fundamental principles, codes. These components emphasise an overarching precedence, of style over fashion―one that is timeless.” according to the Prada September 2019 Spring/summer 2020 press release.
Style Over Fashion
Powerful women who ooze style and transform clothing with their bold personality. Outfits painting a picture of the lady inside, with each garment creating space for a new interpretation. Ease, flow, casualness, and an implied lack of effort. Style over fashion. A means in which to make a statement rather than hide under. These are some of the core intentions behind the Prada Spring/Summer 2020 womenswear collection. A collection based on the power a woman has to transform an item of clothing into an edgy form of self-expression.
Shorelines, Seashells, And Salty Air
For spring/summer 2020, Prada channels salty air, sandy feet, and seaside breezes. Flirty sundresses, chunky seashell necklaces, and nautical knots are heavily featured. But a fresh take on the fisherman’s hat is sure to hook the viral world as the real catch of the day.
Living the best of both worlds, this business-meets-leisure lady, layers chunky seashells around her neck and an earring to match. A-line sundresses cut from creased linen keep her cool on the days spent near the shoreline. Embroidered slips featuring heavy palm-fronds have her covered for sunset drinks and after-dark rendezvous. But both won’t only be worn where the air is salty. Pair them with a block-heel loafer and carry the seaside essence back to the office upon return to the concrete jungle.
Structured blazers, tailored long jackets featuring belt loops and pencil, pleated, or embroidered leather skirts. Seventies tailoring, twenties smocks, and nineties sweater/skirt combinations take the stage―Spring/summer 2020 encourages you to take your pick of decades to channel. Rich browns, deep violets, and Prada’s original geometric jacquard print all make appearances.
“Garments are archetypal and self-referential: each is a statement or outline of its own form type. The extrapolation of a single piece from an ensemble, its move from one person to another, automatically shifts perception, as does its juxtaposition with other garments. There is a sense of immediacy and spontaneity evoked by rawness, by naïve gestures and simple fabrics: kid mohair; fine ribbed knit; embroidered leather with a raw edge, easily tied; a gauze in silk. Brocade and gold are used as contrary punctuation, an interruption.” – Prada September 2019 Spring/summer 2020 press release.
Mixed textures throughout the collection make for a fresh look and feature heavily in the accessories. Velvet, leather, patent, and straw. Heavy rope featured sandals, knots, and macrame handbags. Oversized glasses, bucket bags, and chunky snakeskin heels. But the star―Prada’s own take on the hooded fisherman’s hat―made a striking appearance throughout the show as an essential item. This chic accessory is set to be the collection’s hottest piece and is sure to be a sellout.
Hair And Makeup
A modern-day twist on 1920’s elegance was the theme for Prada’s spring/summer 2020 catwalk show. Simplistic finished updos hinting towards the middle-class attitude Prada often dabbles in. Boyish sideburns make an appearance for a classic look and when paired with artsy makeup can create a more contemporary style.
To match the breezy palm frond theme, natural-looking makeup is in―for both work and play. But for the fearless woman, a bolder approach can be taken to create a look of effortless edge. To get the look, think wet black eyeshadows, strong arches, no mascara, clean skin, and bold red lips. For those ultra-risk-takers, bleached eyebrows are the final touch to complete the look of individuality, beauty, and power.
This spring, Miuccia Prada makes a statement: The person is more important than the clothes. She encourages you to contemplate your personal style rather than solely follow fashion trends. Incorporate timeless pieces to wear however you want. Choose shells over pearls. Go for simplicity and invest wisely in a few items to create your own signature look. Wear it with edge and power, as a style-forward woman. Sassy yet pretty. Chic yet edgy. Prada has all of your wild woman bases covered this spring and summer, take your pick and express yourself however you choose!
