Did you know that just a small amount of certain chemicals is enough to cause corals bleaching? This is a big deal, because when corals bleach, they lose their symbiotic algal energy source and become more susceptible to viral infections. When corals die (no they are not just lifeless stones, they are actually alive) the marine life that relies on them, also die.
Chemical sunscreens use synthetic compounds that absorb UV light before it reaches the skin. The problem is these compounds wash off in the water.
Titanium Dioxide is a common ingredient in most sunscreens. Unfortunately, it does not biodegrade and is found to react in warm seawater to form hydrogen peroxide which is harmful to all sea life. Ingredients like Oxybenzone and octinoxate, are two chemicals recently banned in Hawaii and are believed to cause coral bleaching, which is why the new Anessa Mild does not contain them in its formulation.
The new Anessa Mild range was made specifically for those with sensitive skin. This weightless and streak free formula is said to be gentle enough to be used on babies (over one-year) and the best part? the ingredients used won’t contribute to coral bleaching.
But promises aside, most of the sunscreens that we have tested have been heavy, streaky or left a not so attractive cast or sheen on our faces, so we obviously had to put the new Anessa Mild range to the test. The first thing we noticed was the texture.
The texture is silky and velvety and absorbs into the skin almost instantly. It doesn’t leave any greasy residue, nor it did it leave our skin feeling like it was suffocating – always a plus in our books. Since most of us suffer from sensitive skin – having been used as beauty guinea pigs over the years – having a sunscreen made for senstive skin is a huge bonus!
Anessa’s new Mild Range boats a number of benefits. Its Anti-Pollutant Feature ensures that the sunscreen hugs the skin, preventing pollutants like dust, grime and makeup from coming into direct contact with the skin. And unlike most sunscreens, the Gentle Formulation can be washed away with soap or facial wash. The sunscreen is also free of the Seven Harmful Ingredients normally found in most sunscreens like fragrance, parabens, colourants, alcohol, minerals and coral bleaching ingredients like Octinoxate and Oxybenzone. Its Anti-ageing and Therapeutic ingredients provide anti-inflamatory, anti-oxidant, moisturising and soothing benefits. While its Signature Aqua Booster Technology, means that upon contact with perspiration and water, the negatively charged Aqua Booster ions bind with the minerals and form a protective veil, that is uniform and water-resistant.
The new Anessa Mild range is affordably priced at $13.90 for 20ml and $39.90 for 60ml and is available at selected Watsons, Welcia-BHG and Don Don Donki stores.
