As much as we love to make fun at that dude across the café who’s turned his brunch into some sort of still life photo shoot for the sake of a ‘gram, we’d be lying if we said we’d never exploited a meal for likes.

Eating is the ultimate sensory experience, after all. And even though Instagram doesn’t allow you to take part in the tasting, smelling, hearing or feeling aspects of a meal, the platform has done unprecedented things for the visibility of food.

Whether it’s the glisten of fat on a piece of fried chicken or the pop of purple in a Buddha bowl – there are certain items of food that are now so viral we’re not even sure we can refer to them merely as ‘food’ anymore. In the dawn of this new year, there are certain drinks, snacks and cuisines that have transcended their nutritional purposes to become markers of society and culture, in a similar way that fashion, music and politics are.

And so without further ado, here is a gourmet fad that is primed to go viral in 2019:

While cram-as-much-colour-into-one-post was the foodie’s mantra in 2018, 2019 will see a monochromatic colour palette take centre stage.

This return to colour coordinating can probably be traced to the menswear runways of SS19 and pre-fall, where head-to-toe was the dominant flavour at many of our favourite shows, such as Versace and Louis Vuitton.

The challenge? How many ingredients in varying shades of the same tone can you fit into a rectangular frame, while making sure you’ve got a meal that’s nutritionally balanced? Create, photograph, upload when you do!
