They used to say that when it comes to the dinner table, politics should never make its way into the conversation. But the same can’t be said for the current political climate. When it comes to the Trump administration, there is a certain kind of unity derived from his loathing that can make for a great bonding experience, especially when you bring ice-cream into the mix because, let’s be honest, all we can do now is really just eat our feelings and cry into the tub.
Everyone’s favourite ice cream brand has whipped up a flavour to mark just this occasion with the new ‘Pecan Resist’ from Ben & Jerry’s. In a bid to sweeten the chaos that encapsulates midterm elections, the chocolate ice cream with white and dark fudge chunks, walnuts, fudge-covered almonds, and pecans, is a call for peaceful resistance against the Trump administration’s “regressive and discriminatory policies” that target minority groups, women, people of colour, LGBTQ people, refugees and immigrants.
Ben & Jerry’s partnered with four organisations to launch ‘Pecan Resist’: Honour the Earth, which fights for native environmental and political issues; Women’s March, which fights for women-led political change; Colour of Change, which is the country’s largest online racial justice organisation; and Neta, a media platform that highlights voices along the Southern border. As AP reports, to mark the launch of ‘Pecan Resist’, the ice cream company will donate $25,000 to each of its four partners. For the carton, the brand reached out to artist and social justice activist Favianna Rodriguez, too.
It’s not the first time Ben & Jerry’s has released a frozen protest treat. Previously, they sold ‘I Dough, I Dough’ in line with the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling, and ‘Empower Mint’ in an effort to take a stand against voter repression in North Carolina.
