I don’t golf a lot. I like it, but often have trouble finding friends who want to go with me. The usual excuse is that they’re too busy, not in town or have something better to do.
Nothing is better than spending time with me…
Anyway, I needed a way to find people to golf with me on the rare occasions I decide to dust off the ol’ golf clubs. That’s where Deemples comes in and here’s my assessment of the service.
What is Deemples?
We have a mobile app for everything. You want food, a car, handyman or anything, there’s a mobile app for it. Using that same, very broad principle, you can consider Deemples, the mobile app for golfers looking to create or join existing golf games.
What that actually means, is that if you’re like me and struggle to get enough players to join you for a game, Deemples will help you reach out to thousands of golfers who are in the same situation as you.
I found the UI pretty simple and straightforward, especially if you want to create a game and look for people who are looking for a game near you.
You select the type of game between a driving range and playing a course, as well as the number of holes. The ideal number of golfers per group is four, which is known as a flight.
If you’re short of a couple of players or you’re all by your lonesome, you can select the number of guests you want to invite to your game.
It is also really simple to find existing games and join them, based on the date, time and location, as well as the available slots.
Currently Deemples is available in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan.
Who uses Deemples really?
I must confess to being a bit worried and expecting to see a group of uncles on the app.
What that means is, I expected a very old user base with little or no usage, and joining a game would mean having to spend a lot of time teeing off with a bunch of grumpy old men. I do realise how douchey I sound right now, but I bet most of you are thinking the exact same thing.
However, my experience with the app has been quite pleasant so far with a considerable mix of players, young, older with both men and women actively using Deemples. There seems to be more activity for Malaysian courses, but that’s understandable considering Singapore doesn’t have a large golfing population.
We wanted to find out a bit more about Deemples, so we tracked down Founder and CEO, David Wong, who’s originally from Malaysia to find out more about the app.
When we asked him what excites him about doing something like this in Southeast Asia, his genuine passion for the game really stood out.
“It’s very hard to explain why golf is exciting to a non-golfer, but the most exciting thing about the golf industry is just being able to play it! That’s the main motivation that drives us to continue to help golfers play golf whenever and wherever they want to.”
When asked about his reasons for starting Deemples, his reasons were similar to the frustrations I have as well. David shared, “A round of golf takes four hours not including stopping for food, showering, and the travelling time back and forth. The entire activity takes between six to eight hours, pretty much a whole day. This makes organising golf a pain for most golfers, checking who’s available when, where each player prefers to play and so on”.
“It got to a point where most golfers just want to get a game in regardless if their friends could make it but then again who likes to play alone? Deemples was created exactly for this reason, to help both new and seasoned golfers to get a round in whenever they want, at wherever they want.”
Would I use it again?
Absolutely, in fact, I’m looking at my schedule this weekend to see if I can grab a quick game using Deemples. However, to make a real impact in the industry, there needs to be more golfers on this service.
To find out more about Deemples, you can find them on both the App Store and Play store, or online here.
