Grief rarely adheres to strict ritual. While the Hungry Ghost Month is traditionally marked across Singapore by joss paper smoke and structured ancestral merit-making, many modern mourners crave something quieter, more intimate, and grounded in personal words.

To meet that need, Tibetan Buddhist temple Thekchen Choling has introduced the Blessings Mailbox for this year’s Ullambana Festival. Running from 13 to 29 August 2026, the initiative invites visitors to write unfiltered letters of gratitude, apologies, long-overdue news, or simple affection to those who have passed—whether family members, friends, mentors, or companion animals.

The activation, which forms part of the temple’s silver jubilee celebrations under the banner “Cherishing 25 Years of Togetherness,” bridges solemn Buddhist traditions with personal grief work in three steps:

  • Personal Reflection: A quiet, designated space within the temple grounds provides stationery for visitors to write openly.
  • Sacred Dedication: Letters are deposited into the Blessings Mailbox, receiving daily prayers and merits dedicated by the resident Sangha.
  • Ceremonial Release: At the conclusion of Ullambana, the letters are offered in a final ritual burning ceremony, symbolically sending each note beyond the physical realm.

Alongside the mailbox, the temple continues its traditional 2026 calendar under the “100,000 Buddhas Great Liberation Ullambana Festival”. Key observances throughout August include Chinese and Tibetan chanting recitations, name placement at the Thousand-Arm Guanyin shrine for spiritual protection, and Buddha’s Joyful Day offerings supporting over 200 Venerables across Singapore and Nepal. The community offerings culminate with the Grand Meritorious Offerings to Ancestors and Past Creditors on 22 August, followed by the Charity Ceremony for Wandering Spirits on 23 August.
