There are fashion openings, and then there are moments that feel genuinely meaningful. The debut of Barehands at Takashimaya Shopping Centre falls into the latter, an inspiring testament to how style, sustainability, and craftsmanship can come together beautifully.

As a fashion lover, I found myself completely mesmerised not just by the store’s warm, handcrafted atmosphere, but by the incredible finish and detailing of every piece. The level of craftsmanship on display was deeply impressive, and a powerful reminder of what fashion can be when it’s made with intention.

The opening marks a significant chapter for the homegrown ethical label, known for its commitment to made-to-order garments, small-batch production, and close collaborations with artisan communities. Since its founding in 2019, Barehands has championed thoughtful design and responsible creation, working with refugee tailors in Malaysia, weaving partners in Myanmar, beading artisans in the Philippines, and talented local seamstresses around the world. Every piece carries a story, shaped by hands that are respected, empowered, and celebrated.

A Space Built with Heart

The Takashimaya store brings Barehands’ philosophy to life in a more immersive and expressive way. Designed with warm tones, natural textures, and handcrafted accents, the space feels like a quiet sanctuary amid the bustle of Orchard Road.

Every detail, from pottery lamps wrapped with dead-stock fabric to furniture designed by local creatives, whispers the brand’s ethos of intentionality and collaboration.

A dedicated DIY made-to-order corner invites customers to become co-creators, selecting fabrics and size adjustments after trying on garments. Each custom piece is then crafted within four to seven weeks, allowing for a slower, more personal experience that minimises waste.

There’s also a cosy storytelling nook, where visitors can learn more about the artisans behind each garment or accessory. It’s a tender reminder that every piece is a partnership, a livelihood, and a craft.

Exclusive Collections You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

While the entire space is full of beautifully made designs, the exclusive collections available only at Takashimaya completely caught my eye.

The Artisanal Beaded Bag Collection

The first pieces I gravitated toward were the Alez, Pixi, and Luna beaded bags ($189–$210). Crafted by talented beading artisans from the Philippines, these bags are stunning in person, each bead meticulously stitched to create a perfect balance of tradition and modern flair. The colours, textures, and silhouettes make them feel both playful and elevated. And honestly, for the handiwork involved, they are incredibly well-priced. I couldn’t stop admiring them. They felt like wearable pieces of art.

The Woven Upcycled Leather Bag Collection

Then there was the recycled leather bag collection ($69–$189), Barehands’ first venture into leather accessories. Made with upcycled leather and woven by artisans in Myanmar, these pieces redefine what sustainable luxury can look like. The Woven Lunch Bag ($189) in particular stood out, a soft, slouchy silhouette with a gorgeous woven texture that offers sophistication with a touch of effortless ease.

As someone who appreciates both ethics and aesthetics, these bags completely won me over. Beautiful, thoughtful, responsibly made, and yes, very reasonably priced.

Beloved Classics in Fresh New Shades

Beyond the exclusives, the store also features Barehands’ best-sellers, refreshed in Takashimaya-only colourways. From the evergreen Nora Button Shirt and Ivy Long Pants to the bold Mineral Brown and the playfully printed Drift Shirt in Sketchbook green, the classics feel renewed while keeping their timeless appeal.

A New Must-Visit for Conscious Shoppers

Barehands’ Takashimaya opening is more than a retail expansion, it’s an uplifting celebration of craftsmanship, community, and conscious fashion. The beauty of the pieces, the impeccable finishing, and the thoughtful design of the space are truly impressive. For anyone who values fashion with meaning, this new store is an experience not to be missed.

Barehands @ Takashimaya Shopping Centre is located at #B2-10A/11, Ngee Ann City and is open daily, from 10am to 9.30pm. If you’re looking for pieces made with soul, intention, and artistry, this is the place to be.
