Singapore’s bouldering scene has experienced explosive growth in recent years. In 2018, there were just 13 commercial climbing gyms in the country. By 2022, that number had surged to around 31, reflecting the sport’s rising popularity.
This surge is part of a global trend, with bouldering gaining mainstream attention. The sport’s inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and endorsements from celebrities like Harry Styles and Jason Momoa have amplified its appeal.
It’s More Than Just A Workout
Bouldering offers a unique combination of physical and mental benefits. Physically, it provides a full-body workout, engaging muscles from the fingertips to the toes, enhancing strength, flexibility, and balance. Mentally, it challenges climbers with problem-solving tasks, boosting concentration and reducing stress.
Moreover, the sport fosters a strong sense of community. Climbers often share tips, encourage each other, and celebrate successes together, creating an inclusive environment that welcomes individuals of all fitness levels.
Making Climbing Accessible To All
Despite the sport’s growth, many newcomers still find stepping into a climbing gym intimidating. The routes look complex, regulars seem to speak an entirely different language, and guidance for beginners is often limited to a quick safety briefing. The scene has long been dominated by niche climbing gyms catering to seasoned enthusiasts, leaving first-timers unsure of where to start.
That’s where Boulder Planet comes in. Co-founded by 30-year-old Patrice Verosil, a former competitive climber turned entrepreneur, Boulder Planet was born out of a simple mission: to make climbing accessible, welcoming, and seamlessly integrated into modern urban lifestyles.
Patrice’s journey to co-owning Boulder Planet wasn’t a straight climb. She started her career in climbing as a Program Executive at Boulder Movement, where she developed climbing syllabi, managed corporate events, and handled business development. Despite her passion for the sport, financial realities led her to pivot into the tech industry, where she gained technical problem-solving skills and earned a higher salary, enough to buy an HDB and start a family.
But climbing never left her mind. After reaching financial stability, she began exploring new career opportunities when Ben Toh, the founder of Boulder Planet, approached her to help launch the brand. Initially joining as General Manager in 2021, Patrice played a crucial role in growing the business, despite launching during COVID-19 restrictions. Over time, her strategic input and leadership led to her becoming a co-owner, investing financially to help steer Boulder Planet’s expansion.
Boulder Planet distinguishes itself by focusing on beginner-friendly experiences. Their First-Timer Starter Pack includes an 80-minute onboarding class, two weeks of unlimited access to their gyms, and rental climbing shoes, ensuring newcomers feel supported from the start.
Beyond individual training, Boulder Planet emphasises community and sustainability. They host community events and have implemented a “Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy,” reflecting their commitment to environmental responsibility.
The Future Of Bouldering In Singapore
As bouldering continues to gain traction, gyms like Boulder Planet are leading the way in making the sport more accessible and inclusive. With their focus on beginner support, community building, and sustainability, they are not just promoting a sport but fostering a lifestyle that values health, connection, and environmental consciousness.
For those looking to break away from traditional workouts and embrace a challenging yet rewarding activity, bouldering offers an exciting alternative.
I tried my first bouldering session yesterday, and it was so much fun. I worked out muscles that I didn’t know I even had, and it was one of the most exhilarating workout experiences ever. Far more challenging and fun than your traditional gym workout.
