With its sandy beaches, fresh seafood and beautiful temples, it’s no surprise that Southeast Asia is a favourite for travellers worldwide. Whether you enjoy hiking through the jungle, reading your favourite book on the beach or taking in beautiful sights, the region has something for everyone.

So, if you want to unplug and recharge your batteries, here are my top 5 relaxing destinations in Southeast Asia!

Ubud, Bali

Make it your mission to visit Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, to enjoy a rich culture steeped in a laid-back atmosphere and extraordinary architecture. There’s a reason so many people hold Bali in such high regard. It truly is a spiritual experience.

To experience Ubud in all its glory, try to find accommodation slightly off the beaten track. Start the day with a healthy breakfast (Bali has a plethora of delicious fresh fruit to choose from), then explore the magical rice fields. Visit the famous Monkey Forest and immerse yourself in these fascinating creatures’ homes. It feels like a privilege and something to be treasured.

You can finish your day watching a traditional Balinese dance performance. The carefully choreographed moves and traditional musical instruments make for a moving and unforgettable experience. After this trip, you will feel recharged and ready to face the world again!

Si Phan Don, Laos

For those who genuinely want to unplug from modern-day life, check out Si Phan Don, also known as the 4,000 islands. Situated at the foot of Laos at the Cambodian border, these small yet charming islands are the perfect getaway for backpackers, couples, and those wanting to return to nature.

If you’re travelling solo, renting a bike and making a day of it is a great way to experience the various islands up close and personal. Alternatively, for those travelling with a partner or friend, renting a kayak and enjoying the islands from the water can add that extra touch of serenity to your trip.

In the evening, take advantage of the laid-back approach to your dining experience by sampling some of the local delicacies on the beach, including a refreshing papaya salad or khao poon noodles! Last but not least, don’t forget to visit the extraordinary Somphamit waterfalls on the island of Don Khone

Siquijor, The Philippines

This small island in the Philippines is known for its mystical charm, pristine beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. Often referred to as the “Island of Fire” due to the glow of fireflies at night, Siquijor offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Spend your days lounging on the powdery white sands of Salagdoong Beach or the quiet shores of Paliton Beach, both offering stunning sunsets and tranquil waters. Explore the Cambugahay Falls, where you can swim in the cool turquoise pools or swing from a vine like Tarzan. Those seeking inner peace can visit the Lazi Convent, the oldest and largest convent in Asia, or experience a traditional Hilot (Filipino massage) from a local healer known for their ancient techniques.

Siquijor’s slow-paced lifestyle makes it an ideal place for relaxation and reflection. With many resorts and eco-lodges offering yoga sessions and wellness retreats, you can truly disconnect and recharge.

Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Next on the list is one of my personal favourites: Perhentian Island, a cluster of islands off the coast of Terengganu in Malaysia. If you yearn for a genuine connection to nature, clear, warm water, and swimming with turtles, this is the place for you.

There are two main islands to choose from: Kecil and Besar. I recommend Besar for its quiet and peaceful vibe. Perfect for couples and families, this fantastic island offers lots to explore, eat, and discover.

If this is your first visit to Malaysia, you absolutely must sample the local cuisine, including fried rice, fresh seafood, and a host of delicious exotic fruits. Remember to take plenty of cash, as there are no ATMs on the island!

Koh Lipe, Thailand

Last but by no means least, if you’re one of those people who have always dreamed of going to Thailand, please don’t overlook its best-kept secret—Koh Lipe Island. The charm of this place is in its simplicity. There are no extravagant hotels or spas, just three beautiful beaches ready and waiting for you and some of the best seafood I’ve ever tasted!

If you are in the mood for some activity or exercise, rent a canoe and go exploring (just make sure to come back before the tide goes out, or you’ll be stuck!). Alternatively, Take a walk down Pattaya Street and enjoy the many bars and pubs on offer. Make friends with the locals and bask in the company of many dogs!

From the spirituality of Bali to the simplicity of Thailand, if you want to completely unwind, your next trip should be to one of these relaxing destinations in Southeast Asia.
