LC: Having worked in the hair care industry for many years, what do you think is the biggest mistake most people make when it comes to their hair?

BL: People who choose to keep their hair wet and not blow-dry it because they believe blow-drying will damage the hair. Hair is in a more fragile state when it is wet, which means it will be more prone to breaking if your hair is already damaged. If the scalp is kept wet, it can lead to imbalances and further scalp issues.

LC: How often should a person wash their hair?

BL: Depending on your needs and lifestyle, it is fine to wash one’s hair often to keep your hair and scalp clean. What’s more important is that they should use shampoos that are gentle to the scalp without stripping essential oils.

LC: Is there a foolproof guide for people to know what hairstyle best suits their features and hair type?

BL: For one to know what hairstyle will suit one’s features and hair type, I’d recommend finding a hairstylist who communicates well, and understands your needs and lifestyle, to tailor a hairstyle to their customers.

LC: What hair or scalp advice would you give our readers?

BL: Please blow dry your hair and keep your scalp clean. Do not use harsh cleansers that will strip off all sebum from the scalp, as this can lead to dry scalp and sensitivity.

LC: Are shampoos with SLS really that bad for our scalp/hair?

BL: Shampoos that contain SLS are generally safe for use.

LC: With so many options in the market, how do our readers choose the shampoo/ conditioner best suited for them? Is there anything they should look out for it avoid?

BL: They can start by watching product reviews on social media as this is the most accessible option. Look out for credible, non-brand affiliated reviewers who provide logical, objective reviews. Readers may use the same approach they apply towards skincare for your hair care.

LC: What is best, towel/air drying wet hair or using a hair dryer? Will the heat from the dryer damage our hair?

BL: Air drying and blow-drying are both fine, as long as the method suits the person’s hairstyle, hair texture and condition, and the amount of time available to get the hair and scalp dry. Using towels made from highly absorbent material can help transfer moisture away from hair, but be sure to only gently blot dry wet hair.

Holding the hairdryer to blow-dry at a distance with a lower temperature can speed up drying while preventing heat damage. There are also leave-in conditioners you can apply on hair that offers moisture, smoothness and heat protection.
