Korean skincare, often referred to as K-beauty, has gained popularity globally, and many people have reported positive results from using Korean skincare products. But is it merely a fad or a lasting trend? I decided to pull out my Sherlock investigative skills and dig deeper to see if it is worth the money or just another TikTok trend that will fade into obscurity.
With a market value of over USD 11 billion in 2022, this Asian beauty regime is undoubtedly a money spinner, so I want to get under this lucrative industry’s skin and learn more.
Why Is K-Beauty So Popular?
The industry’s emphasis on innovation, newness, and cultural interconnectedness has contributed to its sustained popularity. The K-beauty trend focuses on specific skincare routines, ingredients, and rituals that have become influential worldwide. South Korea’s dominance in skincare development and the significant increase in cosmetics sales further support the notion that K-beauty is more than just a passing fad.
Much of its appeal lies in its preventive approach, high-quality products, and relatively lower prices compared to Western skincare. Additionally, the continuous emergence of new trends and the global influence of Korean cultural industries, such as K-pop and K-drama, contribute to the sustained interest in the products.
We all want to have that dewy skin of the Blackpink beauties, don’t we?!
But Does It Work?
So, it seems that Korean skincare has transcended the status of a mere fad and has established itself as a significant and enduring trend in the beauty industry, with a global impact and continued innovation. But does it really get results?
Some dermatologists feel that Korean skincare works well for many due to its well-formulated products that target the skin’s microenvironment, contributing to a brighter complexion and protecting the skin barrier. Additionally, individuals have reported softer skin, fewer breakouts, and a more preventative approach to skincare with these products.
While some prefer a mix of Korean and Western skincare, others find that the K-beauty products contain more beneficial ingredients at a lower price. Ultimately, the effectiveness may vary from person to person.
Introducing Korean Products To Your Skincare Routine
If you decide to give it a try, we suggest that you start off by slowly introducing one product at a time to your already-established skincare routine to cause minimal distress to your skin. Suddenly changing products or techniques could cause breakouts or irritate your skin.
Check out the ingredients before buying anything, and if possible, opt for products that use natural, organic or vegan/plant-based cruelty-free ingredients. If you can get some samples to try, then it is best to test them out on your skin because, if you are anything like me, allergies to some ingredients can cause major skin drama!
When you find the best products for your skin, you can go for it and start the famous 10-step Korean skincare routine or maintain your usual skincare regime but use the new items.
