I don’t have any tattoos. I have thought about getting them many times, but I can’t commit to a hair colour, so I am not sure I can settle on a design that I would be happy to look at for the rest of my life. But for those of you out there who love to ink, picking a design is a big part of the process and one that you should take seriously.

After all, it’s going to be on your skin forever. (Unless you get it altered or lasered, of course). Choosing your body art can be challenging, so here is what is trending for 2024 to help you decide.

What’s In For Your Skin?

Tattoo trends for 2024 are expected to be influenced by technological advancements, changing cultural preferences, and evolving artistic styles. According to insights from tattoo artists and industry experts, several trends are projected to shape the tattoo landscape this year.

Floral And Minimalistic Designs: The evergreen (pun intended) floral designs and minimalistic styles are anticipated to remain popular in 2024, reflecting a continued preference for understated and elegant tattoos. These can range from a simple solitary flower in black ink to a beautiful, colourful bouquet.

Choose a flower or plant that resonates with you or links to someone you love. If I were going down this route, I would want two sunflowers to represent my sons and a poppy and a rose, as my cherished nieces are called Poppy and Rosie.

Artificial Intelligence Integration: The buzz around artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to influence the tattoo world, with the potential for AI-generated designs and customisation becoming more common. Programs such as Dall-E or even a specific AI tattoo generator can help you create a unique design that perfectly reflects you and your life.

Hold on while I ask an AI generator to design a tattoo with the Petronas Towers with the flowers of her choice on a purple heart…

Realistic Tattoos: Both colour and grey ink realistic tattoos are projected to continue being popular choices in 2024, showcasing the enduring appeal of lifelike representations. My lovely friend (and fantastic hairdresser!) Eliah is considering getting a tattoo of the love of his life, his gorgeous dog Gigi.

Getting true-to-life images of someone or an animal you love can be a great way of honouring and remembering them when they have left this earth.

Innovative Styles: As our world becomes more digital and we look towards a more technologically advanced society, emerging styles such as cyber sigilism, characterised by a more veiny and futuristic aesthetic, are predicted to gain traction.

This new take on the formerly popular tribal and barbed wire style tattoos are not for everyone, but if you want to be on trend, this might be the one for you!

Personalised And Minimalistic Tattoos

Any ink I would get would be personal to me, but many people in the past have gone for more generic styles. The 2024 trends show personalisation of your body art as a big trend.

Lots of new tats are also expected to be characterised by increased creativity and personalisation, with some leveraging new technologies, such as AI design, to create unique and innovative designs. If you can dream up the image, you can create it and get a great tattoo artist to bring it to life on your skin.

The new year seems set to shift towards a “less is more” aesthetic, focusing on simple, clean linework and delicate strokes. There is an emphasis on minimal designs, reflecting a preference for understated elegance.

The new, evolving trends for 2024 are anticipated to focus more on the creative mix of references and ideas rather than solely aiming for technically perfect results. This suggests a growing emphasis on individuality and artistic expression in tattoo designs rather than the almost “copy and paste” style of the past, where everyone got tribal or Chinese symbols.

As the stigma attached to tattoos disappears to almost just a memory in Western society, having artistic expressions of who you are has become much more commonplace. When I was a child and teen, people with body art were seen as deviants or scary people. Now, thanks to many famous people such as footballers, musicians and actors proudly displaying their souls in colour on their skin, it has become almost as vital an expression of who you are as the clothes you wear.

The tattoo trends for 2024 are poised to encompass a diverse range of styles, from timeless and elegant designs to innovative and personalised creations. The influence of technology, evolving artistic preferences, and a growing emphasis on individuality are set to shape the tattoo landscape in the coming year.
