Coca-Cola Singapore is making significant strides towards its World Without Waste initiative by introducing 100% recycled plastic bottles (excluding caps and labels) and unveiling a new plastic bottle collection programme in the city-state.

The pioneering use of 100% recycled plastic is being rolled out in three 500ml variants – Coca-Cola Original Taste Less Sugar, Coca-Coca Zero Sugar, and Coca-Cola Vanilla.

Sustainable Packaging Worldwide

This move follows Coca-Cola’s introduction of the clear Sprite bottle with 10% recycled plastic in 2020. Presently, Coca-Cola offers at least one brand in 100% recycled plastic bottles in over 40 countries globally, including packages in Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and the latest addition, Singapore.

Coca-Cola Singapore’s latest initiative aligns with The Coca-Cola Company’s ambitious global sustainable packaging strategy. The company aims to make 100% of its primary consumer packaging recyclable worldwide by 2025 and use at least 50% recycled content in its packaging by 2030. As of 2022, The Coca-Cola Company reported a 25% use of recycled material in its packaging.

The 100% recycled plastic bottles uphold the high-quality standards consumers expect, adhering to The Coca-Cola Company’s stringent global standards for food-grade, recycled plastic bottles, and complying with the Singapore Food Agency’s regulations.

To boost plastic bottle recycling rates in Singapore, Coca-Cola is collaborating with local public waste collector SembWaste to launch a PET bottle collection programme. Starting from Q1 2024, consumers across the city can deposit PET or rPET bottles for recycling in collection bins located at nine highly frequented locations, including commercial buildings and neighbourhood centres/malls.

Streamlined Recycling Process

The collection programme aims to maximise convenience for consumers by leveraging SembWaste’s collection and clean stream recycling expertise. This includes sorting recyclables at source and using waterproof bag lining, ensuring fuss-free and accessible recycling for all Singaporeans. The collected recyclables will be transported to Hiroyuki Industries Group in Malaysia, a plastic products processing and manufacturing company, for downstream recycling into rPET.

Kok Kin Lee, Chief Executive Officer of SembWaste, expressed enthusiasm about supporting Coca-Cola’s PET bottle collection programme, emphasising their dedication to building awareness and encouraging better recycling practices to address the issue of plastic waste and promote a closed-loop circular economy.
