Have you ever wondered where that suitcase you lost on a plane trip in America washed up? Enter Scottsboro, a small city in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama, home to the Unclaimed Baggage Center (UBC)—aka the “lost luggage capital of the world.”
The 40,000-square-foot warehouse is filled with unclaimed personal belongings from airline passengers across the USA. But that’s not all this unusual place has to offer. There are many reasons to visit this original location, from annual concerts to an entire museum.
Let’s take a tour of this extraordinary facility, where lost luggage finds new life and visitors can uncover hidden treasures!
How It All Started
The story of the UBC began in 1970 when Doyle Owens, an entrepreneurial-minded insurance salesman, had a lightbulb moment. He started buying and selling luggage left behind at a bus station in DC and soon expanded his operations to include items from airlines. Eventually, he moved back to his hometown—Scottsboro, Alabama—and the UBC was born. What started as a part-time business quickly became a full-time venture. In 1995, Doyle’s son, Bryan Owens, took over the privately held company.
Today, the UBC stands as the nation’s only merchant of unclaimed luggage, spreading over an entire city block near historic downtown Scottsboro. Around 60% of the merchandise consists of clothing, while other common items include jewellery, electronics, and, of course, suitcases. The retail complex attracts about a million visitors yearly from the USA and 40 other countries, making it one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions.
How It Works
Before you start thinking airlines are selling your stuff for profit, consider that there’s less than a 2% chance of your luggage truly getting lost. Airlines go to great lengths to reunite you with your belongings. Still, after a rigorous 90-day search, your bag legally belongs to them—although you’ve likely received some form of compensation by then. Only after these 3 months of intensive tracking, if the airline fails to locate the owner, does the UBC step in and purchase the unclaimed bags.
Since airlines aren’t liable for carry-ons, and many people leave stuff behind in the cabin, they’re the company’s bread and butter. And with more people avoiding baggage fees, the electronics department keeps thriving with forgotten tech being found in the overhead lockers and seat pockets!
As the country’s largest purchaser of unclaimed baggage and freight, the UBC also buys bags from train stations, car rentals, and even surplus cargo. Thus, the warehouse gets stocked with a staggering 7,000 new items daily and houses over a million things at any given time.
Meticulous Sorting Process
Each item that arrives at the UBC is considered for sale, donation, or disposal. Almost a third is recycled, another third is donated to charities, and the remaining is sold. About 20,000 sellable items are cleaned daily at UBC’s in-house dry cleaner.
Jewellery is cleaned and appraised, while electronics undergo a thorough cleaning process, ensuring your personal files don’t end up in the wrong hands. Some discoveries go back to the government, like an F-16 fighter jet guidance system valued at $250,000 and a NASA Space Shuttle camera.
Bargains Galore
With all items selling for 20-50% of their original retail value, the UBC is a paradise for bargain hunters. Returns are accepted within 14 business days, with exchanges or store credit offered. What better place to find unique gifts and affordable wedding/engagement rings?
In fact, some astonishing items have been uncovered here over the years. From a 40.95-carat emerald to a $60,000-worth platinum Rolex and a jacket signed by Paul McCartney, the surprises keep coming. Egyptian artefacts, original paintings, Versace gowns, Vera Wang wedding dresses, and even a 5.8-carat solitaire diamond ring hidden in a sock! It’s like a treasure hunt where you never know what you’ll discover.
Explore The Museum
If you visit, check out the UBC’s fascinating museum showcasing some of the most bizarre items they’ve encountered. Some of these include a live rattlesnake, vacuum-packed frogs, a six-foot-tall paper mache Tinkerbell, a set of McDonald’s arches, a puppet from the movie “Labyrinth,” an engraved headstone, a full suit of armour, and a mummified hawk dating back 4,000 years. Fascinating stuff!
Check Out The Events
The facility goes beyond thrift shopping, offering about 26 annual events and concerts, making it a vibrant and dynamic destination. Don’t miss the Winter & Ski Sale, their version of Black Friday specifically for winter gear.
The UBC is not just a store; it’s an experience that offers the thrill of discovery, the joy of bargains, and the wonder of the unexpected. Whether you’re on a treasure hunt, interested in a quirky museum, or simply looking for a unique shopping experience, the UBC has it all. So, why not plan a trip to this extraordinary place? You’ll never look at lost luggage the same way again!
