The worldwide smash hit musical “MAMA MIA!” is set to grace Singapore’s stage this October, offering a limited but unforgettable season. Judy Craymer’s visionary interpretation beautifully weaves the timeless songs of ABBA into a sunny, funny tale set against the enchanting backdrop of a Greek island.
Having been previously presented in Singapore in 2014 and 2018, “MAMA MIA!” has solidified its place as a cherished favourite among Singaporean audiences over the years. Its universal appeal continues to draw audiences of all ages, showcasing its enduring charm and allure.
The success of the English-language International Tour is nothing short of remarkable, premiering in Dublin in September 2004 and subsequently gracing 41 countries, totaling over 3,500 shows and impressing over 7 million individuals. Notably, “MAMA MIA!” made history by becoming the first Western musical to captivate audiences in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China, attaining the status of the 8th longest-running show in Broadway history with a record-breaking 14-year run.
The narrative power of more than 22 of ABBA’s greatest hits, including iconic tracks such as “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Does Your Mother Know,” and the titular “MAMMA MIA!,” drives the charming story of love, laughter, and friendship that unfolds on stage.
Judy Craymer’s production masterpiece, “MAMA MIA! The Movie,” broke records upon its release in 2008, earning the title of the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time. Following this success, the sequel “MAMA MIA! Here We Go Again” in 2018 surpassed expectations, becoming the most successful live musical movie sequel in history.
Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the brilliant minds behind ABBA’s music and lyrics, infuse their magic into “MAMA MIA!” The story, penned by Catherine Johnson, comes to life under the capable direction of Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. Mark Thompson’s design, complemented by Howard Harrison’s lighting and Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken’s sound, transforms the stage into a visually and aurally captivating experience. Musical supervision, additional material, and arrangements by Martin Koch add depth and brilliance to this outstanding production.
The staging of “MAMA MIA!” in Singapore is made possible by the dedication and collaboration of Judy Craymer, Richard East, and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar, in association with Universal and NGM. The show is proudly presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia under the direction of Chantal Prudhomme.
Set to grace the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands from 19th October to 5th November 2023, “MAMA MIA!” promises to captivate audiences with performances on Tuesdays to Thursdays at 8 pm, Fridays at 8 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm and 8 pm, and Sundays at 1 pm and 6.30 pm. With a total performance duration of 150 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission, this musical extravaganza is an unmissable delight for all who appreciate the magic of ABBA’s music and a heartwarming story on the stage.
This has to be my favourite musical of all time, so to be able to watch it being performed live on stage was truly a dream come true for me. From the very first song, we found our feet tapping to the beat of the music, itching to get up and sing and dance with the cast. If you loved the movie, you will not want to miss the musical, trust me on this.
