Although I live in Singapore, a country where you can find at least one TCM clinic per neighbourhood, I had never actually tried a TCM body massage before and was curious as to how it differed from a ‘regular’ massage.

Before the treatment can begin, your practitioner will measure the bio-electric conductivity of the meridians in your body to see if there is any disharmony in your organs. Although this does sound rather frightening, it was completely painless. All you have to do is relax and hold on to a metal rod.

The machine is able to detect results from liver functions, to blood sugar, and toxin levels in the body.

A sensor is placed in the palm of your hand, while the machine that is connected to a computer reads and presents the findings. This allowes your practitioner to formulate a suitable treatment plan to strengthen, unblock or warm stagnant meridians.

We all have twelve main meridians, or invisible channels throughout our body where our Qi or energy flows. Sometimes pressure (read – massage) is needed at these points to clear up blocked pathways to help ensure a healthy, balanced and harmonious flow of energy through the meridians.

By unlocking blocked meridians that correspond to the various internal organs, the practitioner can restore balance within the body, while also detoxifying and improving blood circulation.

The treatment uses manual massage techniques combined with herbal oils and/or moxibustion to magnify the results. This meridian point massage is said to detoxify the internal organs, improving blood circulation, the immune system and fix underlying health issues.

The treatment uses moxibustion (heat therapy) to stimulate acupressure points and improve the flow of your Qi. Energy is transmitted to relevant body areas via the meridian network to promote healing.

Moxibustion has been used by TCM practitioners and doctors for thousands of years. It improves the flow of Qi, which is the energy in the body because heated moxa stimulates the nerves and releases endorphins to block pain.

While any type of heat applied to the body can increase the flow of qi and blood, the heat combined with the powerful healing properties of mugwort gives moxibustion a proven advantage, and I can attest to this fact, because as soon as the moxibustion commenced, my soreness and muscle aches simply melted away.

This relaxing treatment is 90 minutes long and is priced at $398. If you would like to try it out, you can enjoy it at the trial price of $98.
