While most face creams contain only 5 – 10% of active ingredients, a face serum can contain up to 70%, making them extremely potent and a step in your daily skin care regimen, not to be skipped.

Serums are made of very small molecules, so the skin is able to absorb them quickly and deeply compared to regular moisturizers. The most common benefits of many serums in the market include hydration, increased nourishment, brightening and acne prevention. For those of you who are still sceptical about the importance of using a serum, we hope that our article will convince you to make an investment in your face, because trust us, serums are awesome – they do work and they are totally worth every penny!

We have tried and tested a heap of popular serums and have shortlisted the following as our Five Best Serums for 2018, based on their efficacy, price and over all feel, results seen and ease of use.

JYUNKA M+ Fluid. If you are looking for a good vitamin C serum, look no further, this miracle in a bottle is really worth its weight in gold!  Encapsulating the purest form of L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) with patented Qu-some technology. The nano-capsules that make up this serum, penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, reaching the muscular level to stimulate collagen, elastin and skin cell production to lift, lighten, heal and repair.

If used religiously every day, expect to see improvements in ageing skin in two-three months. The immediate release of their Super Nano-Capsule QU-SOME – an ultra-fine particle of 100nm, which is 1000 – 5000 times more concentrated than regular serums – upon application is the reason behind the instant results. If their impressive results weren’t enough to sway you, the beautiful packaging and bottle will. For more information about Jyunka products, click here.

JYUNKA Ageless Emulsion. This silky serum works to improve skin smoothness, clarity and radiance and reduces fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone by activating cell regeneration.

Active ingredients like SenestemTM and Neroguard work in synergy to combat ageing and improve skin texture by restoring the epidermis. While Centella asiatica extract soothes and reduces irritation. If you have oily skin and don’t like the feeling of using a moisturizer, this lightweight serum can double up as a light moisturizer, unlike most serums, which do require you to use a moisturizer after.

EHA SKINCARE Hydra Serum. One of the main causes of skin ageing is dehydration, which is why this serum made it to our list. It is literally jam-packed with hyaluronic acid and took the brand three years to formulate – and we are hooked on its super-light texture.

The serum is very lightweight and perfect for those of you who hate the feeling of having a layer of product on your skin. It is also unscented and is gentle enough for sensitive skin and a godsend for post laser treatments. The key ingredient in the serum is Hyaluronic acid of a very high concentration and quality. Upon application, skin is immediately smoother and plumped and lines less visible.

This uniquely lightweight serum does not clog pores and is suitable even for acne prone skin. The high viscosity (it is very stretchy) enables this serum to form a thin, yet highly protective layer over the skin, to maintain and lock in hydration all day long. This is the perfect serum for those of you who hate heavy skin care. But don’t underestimate its moisturising abilities, because this water-like serum, packs quite a punch! BelleWave Restorative Luminous Essence. This intensely concentrated essence works deep within the skin to enhance and unify skin-tone for optimal clarity and luminosity. It diffuses visible dark spots while actively preventing discolourations from forming. Skin is healthy, clearer and visibly more vibrant-looking.

If you have freckles or scars that require lightening, this serum would be a great addition to your skin care regimen as it works to reduce the formation of dark spots at its source, while maintaining skin health from within. For more information, click here.

FILORGA Skin Perfusion Time Booster. This serum works as an intensive anti-ageing regimen against all sorts of wrinkles, like expression lines, dehydration wrinkles and fine lines. It comes in a box of three 10 ml airless bottles. The active ingredients are perfectly preserved for maximum performance in each airtight container.

Each bottle contains a two-phase solution which is activated upon usage, so ingredients are only mixed when you are ready to use it, keeping it fresh and potent. It effectively smoothens out fine lines and wrinkles and is ideal for retinol users or those with dry, normal, combination or oily skin. If however, you have sensitive and reactive skin, please do a patch test first to be safe, or seek the advice of your dermatologist.

While serums can be chock-full of moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, that doesn’t make them moisturizers in the traditional sense. Face lotions and creams, suitable for your skin type and condition are still required. This is because lotions and creams are richer in texture and create a barrier on top of the skin to lock all the beneficial ingredients of your skin care products in, so always remember to end your skin care routine with a suitable moisturiser (except in the case of Jyunka Ageless Emulsion, which can, in a push, double up as a moisturizer) .
