While it’s become Second Nature to grab a can of poison and press down on the nozzle, consider the harmful effects your actions could have to both yourself and the planet.

Wouldn’t it be safer and more responsible (although slightly more labour intensive we admit) to make a repellent that you know is effective and safe – instead of using something you know for a fact is bad for everyone and the planet?

If ants are invading your kitchen, your first course of action would be to not leave any food on the counter, as this will attract not just ants, but roaches and rodents too. But if these little critters have decided to take residence in your home, here is a simple and safe non-toxic chemical free ant repellent, you can try:

1/4 cup purified water
1/4 cup vodka  to help suspend the oil in the water)
15 drops peppermint essential oil
15 drops tea tree essential oil
7 drops citrus essential oil (orange, lemon, grapefruit, etc) OR 1-3 drops clove essential oil (you can find all these oils here)

Simply combine the ingredients and add them in a spray bottle and spritz the problem areas, for a safe but effective solution.

To safely repel spiders and ants, pour a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball or cotton pad and place in areas where you find spiders and ants. Better yet, make a peppermint bug spray. Add 4-5 drops of peppermint essential oil to water in a spray bottle.

This also works to get rid of aphids in the garden and is a lovely smelling way to keep your home bug-free, without the poison!
