Following an extensive makeover, the National Library Board’s (NLB) Bukit Batok Library officially reopened its doors last week, unveiling a transformative space that trades the traditional “shush” for a carefully curated symphony of local sounds.
Officiated by the Minister for Digital Development and Information, Mrs Josephine Teo, the library has undergone a remarkable physical and conceptual expansion. No longer confined to a single floor of West Mall, the library now spans Levels 1, 2, and 3. This expansion has effectively doubled its footprint to 2,700 square metres, providing nearly twice the seating capacity for a community that has long championed this literary hub.
A Sanctuary Inspired by “Little Guilin”
Taking aesthetic and emotional cues from the nearby Bukit Batok Town Park—affectionately known as Little Guilin—the redesign prioritises mindfulness. The goal is to offer a “calming sanctuary” where residents can reset and recharge away from the urban bustle.
What truly sets this branch apart, however, is its pioneering use of audio as a tool for discovery. For the first time, NLB has integrated a high-fidelity aural experience to complement the printed word.
The centrepiece of this initiative is the SingLand Soundscape, developed in partnership with Singapore Land Group. Visitors entering on Level 1 are greeted by three bespoke soundtracks composed by local sound artist Mervin Wong. Using ambisonic field recordings—360-degree audio captures of everyday life in Bukit Batok—the soundscape creates an immersive environment that follows patrons up to Level 2. By blending these ambient textures with curated archival visuals from NLB’s collections, the library brings the heritage and shared memories of the district to life in a way that feels both modern and nostalgic.
Where Physical Shelves Meet “Infinite” Possibilities
Beyond its atmospheric upgrades, the library is a testing ground for omni-channel technology, bridging the gap between physical browsing and digital convenience.
- Infinite Shelves: In popular sections like Travel, Health, and Adult Fiction, physical bookshelves appear to extend into interactive digital displays. This “visual expansion” allows patrons to browse NLB’s vast eBook collection as if they were browsing physical spines.
- Scan-n-Discover: For those looking for their next great read, this interactive feature allows users to scan a book’s QR code. The screen then “explodes” with tailored recommendations for both physical and digital titles available for immediate loan.
- Audiobook Integration: Aligning with the library’s sound-centric theme, digital displays now allow for the seamless borrowing of audiobooks. By scanning a code via the NLB Mobile App, users can access thousands of narrated titles, bypassing the limitations of physical stock.
Enhanced Accessibility
Recognising the diverse schedules of its users, the library has introduced extended operating hours enabled by automated gantries. While staff-assisted services begin at 11:00 am, the library doors on all three levels open at 9:00 am for those using the NLB Mobile App to enter. For the night owls, the Multimedia and Study Zone on Level 2 remains open until 10:00 pm.
As the Bukit Batok Library enters this new chapter, it stands as a testament to how technology can enhance, rather than replace, the physical joy of reading. It is no longer just a place to borrow books; it is a space to listen, reflect, and connect with the stories of Singapore.
