I love a good adventure, and I also love Asia. I first travelled here in 2017, intending to spend a year. I fell in love with Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and have been pretty much using it as my base to explore the region ever since. But much of my exploration has been to the better-known and more touristy areas.
This year, I want to change that and explore off-the-beaten-path places. Here are a few destinations on my list, and I want you to tell me where I should go first!
The Wonders Of Asia
This vast and diverse continent has incredible places with remote islands and ancient temples; Asia has everything. It has a rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking landscapes, and it is the ultimate destination for many travel enthusiasts seeking unique and unforgettable experiences. From vibrant cities to serene countryside, there is something for everyone here.
These hidden gems offer all this and a unique and unforgettable travel adventure that will leave you breathless and craving more.
Luang Prabang, Laos
Nestled in the lush mountainous region of Laos, Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its serene atmosphere and well-preserved architecture. I plan to explore its ancient temples, stroll along the charming streets lined with colonial buildings, and witness the daily ritual of monks collecting alms at sunrise.
My research recommends that I also check out the breathtaking Kuang Si Waterfalls, where I can swim in the turquoise pools surrounded by lush greenery. Sounds amazing!
Hoi An, Vietnam
I have been to a few places in Vietnam but have yet to make it to Hoi An. I have been told that this charming town in central Vietnam, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its well-preserved ancient buildings and unique blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences.
Taking a leisurely stroll through the Old Town’s narrow lanes, adorned with colourful lanterns, and visiting the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge are said to be some of the highlights. Hoi An is also famous for its tailor-made clothing, so I might have to indulge in some shopping and get a custom-made outfit created just for me! A girl’s got ta shop, right?
Tbilisi, Georgia
This vibrant capital city of Georgia is a treasure trove of history, culture, and stunning architecture. Friends of mine have spent time here and loved exploring the winding streets of the Old Town, with its colourful buildings and traditional wooden balconies.
I have been told that visiting the Narikala Fortress will give me panoramic city views. I have also been advised to wander through the lively Shardeni Street, filled with cafes, bars, and art galleries. Because I love a spa day, the sulphur baths, a unique Georgian tradition that dates back centuries, also appeal to me. Pamper day! Yay!
Raja Ampat Islands, Indonesia
I recently read about the majestic Raja Ampat in the West Papua province of Indonesia. Looking at the pictures, I was in awe of the breathtaking scenery, with its jungle-clad rocks towering over the emerald waters, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere. It looks like another planet.
I would love to explore the sandy beaches, hidden caves, and secret islets in a place home to some of the world’s most diverse marine life. Crystal-clear waters and coral reefs beckon those who love to dive. Me, I will explore from the safety of a glass-bottomed boat. #scaredofseacreatures
Kanchanaburi, Thailand
I have also been to Thailand, but not to Kanchanaburi. It is said to be one of the best hidden gems in Southeast Asia. About two hours west of bustling Bangkok, the town is enveloped in green jungle and is home to magnificent waterfalls and some dark World War II history.
Kanchanaburi is home to the famous River Kwai bridge, which prisoners of war were forced to build, with many dying during its construction. A visit to the Death Railway Museum and other monuments to the sad time of its history is a must for me. I think it is vital to visit these tragic places as they help to remind us how lucky we are and help us understand the pain war causes.
Other Recommendations
While the above are places I hope to explore soon, there are some places I have been to and highly recommend. Nestled in the mountains in Sri Lanka, Ella is a tiny village with pure air and good living. Another place I really enjoyed was the Backwaters in Kerala. After the hustle and bustle of some of India’s towns and cities, floating slowly through this network of canals and lagoons is a beautiful way to unwind and enjoy some tranquillity. On the Indonesian part of Borneo, Pontianak was also a fascinating place to visit. It helped me tick “standing with one foot on either side of the equator” off my bucket list.
So, go on, get exploring. Oh, and remember to tell me where my next trip should be in the comments below!
