By Julie-Ann Sherlock

Travelling to new and exciting destinations is an experience I and many other people look forward to; I may actually be addicted to this buzz. With countless options of bucket-list-worthy destinations worldwide, it can be almost impossible to choose where to go for your next long adventure or short city break.

But for those seeking a bit of fantasy and magic in their travels, here are five destinations that will surely excite and inspire. Step onto my magic carpet and let our magical mystery tour begin!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Orlando, Florida

The magic of movies and books comes alive for the fans of the Harry Potter series at Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Florida, USA. You will feel like you’ve stepped straight into the magical world of Hogwarts when you visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter spread across the two joined theme parks.

From sipping butterbeer in Hogsmeade to wandering through the halls of Hogwarts Castle, this destination is a dream come true for Potterheads. Take a trip on the Hogwarts Express between the two areas to explore Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.

Purchase a wand online or from Ollivanders and use it to animate or interact with various attractions throughout the park. And, if, like me, you rip the bottom out of your trousers sitting on a bench drinking your butterbeer, never fear; you can buy some new ones in the gift shop!

Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata, New Zealand

The fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit will love visiting Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata, New Zealand. Used in filming both movies, the fantastically quirky set has been preserved and turned into a tourist attraction.

Take a guided tour of the picturesque Hobbiton village, complete with hobbit holes and the famous Green Dragon Inn. The attention to detail in the set design will make visitors feel like they’ve stepped into Middle-earth. Combine your day out with a trip to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves for a truly magical experience.

The Enchanted Forest, Pitlochry, Scotland

If you fancy a teddy bear’s picnic with a difference, go down to the woods at The Enchanted Forest in Pitlochry, Scotland! With a yearly autumnal event, this stunning natural attraction becomes a magical destination for those who love nature and fantasy.

From October until November, the forest is transformed into an enchanted wonderland with a light and sound show that takes visitors on a journey through a fantasy world. The show features stunning light installations, music, and special effects that make you feel like you’re walking through a fairytale. The Enchanted Forest is a truly unique experience that will leave you awestruck.

If you want some more fantasy while in Scotland, take a free Harry Potter walking tour in Edinburgh and visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct, recognisable as the bridge the Hogwarts Express takes in the movies. And, if you have some more time on your hands, head further north and see if you can spot the Loch Ness Monster!

The Fairy Tale Road, Germany

The Fairy Tale Road in Germany is a 370-mile route that takes visitors on a journey through the land that inspired the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. The trail begins in Hanau, the birthplace of the famous writers, and winds through picturesque towns and villages that inspired their stories.

Follow in the footsteps of Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White as you explore castles, museums, and other attractions along the way. The road is a must-visit destination for lovers of fairy tales and German culture.

As a child, one of my favourite stories was Town Musicians of Breman; I particularly loved the Donkey. So visiting the city and seeing a statue of them was undoubtedly a bucket-list moment for this perpetual child! Nourish your inner child by immersing yourself in the stories of the Brothers Grimm.

The Game Of Thrones Filming Locations, Northern Ireland

Fan of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones? Then visit the real-life locations where the show was filmed in Northern Ireland! From the iconic Dark Hedges to the stunning Castle Ward, these locations will surely transport you to the world of Westeros and beyond.

Enjoy a guided tour of the filming locations and a studio tour. If you like, dress up in costume and sit on the Iron Throne for that perfect Instagram picture.

While many fantastic fantasy destinations exist, these five offer unique and magical experiences for travellers looking to add enchantment to their trips. Whether it’s wandering through the halls of Hogwarts or taking a journey through the land of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales, these destinations are sure to inspire and delight visitors of all ages.
