Are you a solo female traveller ready to embark on your next adventure? The world is your oyster, filled with countless destinations waiting to be explored. I have travelled a lot on my own and relish the opportunity to explore the world at my own pace and how I want to without consulting others.

If, like me, safety, fun, and adventure are high on your list of priorities, I have curated a list of what I consider the top travel destinations for solo female travellers in 2023.

Ready. Steady. Pack. Go!

Iceland

Known for its breathtaking landscapes and being the safest country in the world, Iceland is an excellent place for us solo female wanderers to explore. Whether exploring Reykjavik, the vibrant capital city or embarking on a road trip along the famous Ring Road, Iceland offers a unique blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences.

No trip to this frosty outcrop would be complete without soaking in the geothermal hot springs and witnessing the stunning Northern Lights. Iceland truly has it all for the adventurous solo female traveller.

I have yet to make it up to this high point of Europe due to my aversion to all things cold (except beer and ice cream). However, my best friend Sarah spent her 40th birthday (and New Year’s Eve! Brrr!) in this snowy utopia, and it ranks highly as one of the best trips she has ever done. I am almost tempted.

New Zealand

For thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts, New Zealand is a dream destination. With its majestic mountains, picturesque lakes, and adrenaline-pumping activities, this country offers a perfect balance of safety and adventure.

Explore the stunning landscapes of Queenstown, go hiking in Fiordland National Park, or indulge in water sports in the Bay of Islands. New Zealand is a playground for solo female travellers seeking both excitement and natural beauty.

It is also THE place to geek out over the Lord of the Rings with the series of movies being filmed here. If the Ring is your thing, check out the Lord of the Rings Trilogy experience and immerse yourself in hobbits and magic.

Japan

Japan is not only known for its rich cultural heritage but also for being an incredibly safe and hospitable country. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern innovations.

Indulge in the vibrant street food culture, visit iconic landmarks like Mount Fuji, or take a peaceful stroll through the beautiful cherry blossom gardens. Japan is a must-visit destination for solo female travellers seeking a mix of fun and cultural exploration while knowing they are safe.

And, as most of us ladies like to be pampered occasionally, it would almost be a crime not to visit a Japanese-style spa or onsen to relax those travel-weary bones. The Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen in Hokkaido comes highly recommended.

Costa Rica

If you like sipping cocktails on stunning beaches or are a nature lover looking for adventure, Costa Rica should be at the top of your list. With its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and diverse wildlife, this Central American gem offers endless opportunities for relaxation and adrenaline-driven activities.

Zipline through the treetops, surf the Pacific waves or hike in the breathtaking national parks. Then park your tired butt on a beach-side sunlounger and soak up some rays with a cold drink. Bliss.

Costa Rica is not only a paradise for solo female travellers but also known for its eco-friendly initiatives and commitment to sustainable tourism. Go clean and green while having a great time.

Portugal

Now on top of many digital nomads’ lists of European destinations, Portugal is a hidden gem that combines safety, history, and charm. From the colourful streets of Lisbon to the historic towns of Porto and Sintra, this country offers a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and stunning landscapes.

Explore mediaeval castles, indulge in delicious pastries, and soak up the sun on the beautiful Algarve coast. Portugal is a welcoming destination that will make solo female travellers feel right at home.

I spent some time in Lisbon, and the Algarve in 2019, and the relaxed vibes almost made me choose it as a home base. Go check it out.

Remember, while these destinations are known for their safety and adventure, taking precautions and staying informed about local customs and regulations is essential.

Research travel advisories, stay connected with fellow travellers, and trust your instincts. You can safely explore these amazing countries with the right planning and mindset.

So, pack your bags, embrace the unknown, and prepare to make memories that will last a lifetime. The world is waiting for you to unleash your wanderlust and embark on the adventure of a lifetime!
